Essential Software and Utilities pt.1
Doing the proverbial »switch« from Windows to Mac OS X at home (business still runs on Microsoft), it takes quite some getting used to the changes. Not that either OS is so unique, but I have a couple of favorite tools and utilities on Windows that are an intricate part of my everyday work and had to find equivalents for my Mac. In the next few weeks I will list the programs and how I replaced them.
KeyNote

⇒ Hog Bay Notebook

a lot of organizers/editors are available for both worlds, so the selection depends mostly on what your preference for organizing notes is. I don't really like Stickies or similar applications, rather keep my ideas and notes in a hierarchical structure.
Looking at texteditors for programming and webdesign, I'm a longtime fan of MultiEdit 8

and by recommendation of pretty much everybody tried BBEdit

which looks powerful enough but still takes a lot of getting used to.
For FTP transmissions I stick with CuteFTP 3.5

, the version might be outdated, but it does everything I want and allows for more control than most current FTP programs ⇒ Transmit

seems to be a good replacement on the Mac side.
Mailwasher Pro

is extremely handy for spam filtering and one of the few programs that allows deletion of unwanted messaged right on the POP server. POPmonitor

does similar things, including white-listing and filtering but is not yet quite as comfortable if you have to manage multiple e-mail addresses.

Still looking for a Mac counterpart to ACDSee

, the Mac version is far from acceptable and iPhoto has a lot of problems with huge collections of pictures. JView is ok but has limited functionality.

Hog Bay Notebook: auf empfehlung eines dogfood-lesers hin, habe ich DEVONthink ausprobiert und bin begeistert daran hängen geblieben.

gegen DEVONthink spricht der höhere preis und das fehlen von verknüpfungen der notizen untereinander, nach art der WIKI-links bei hog bay.

für DEVONthink die art und weise wie man material eingeben kann. man kann viele dateiformate "reinbekommen", per drag'n'drop oder dem "service"-menü, notfall lässt sich auf externe dateien verlinken. formatierung und suche haben mir auch besser gefallen.

BBEdit: meine dringende empfehlung: gerade zu anfang sollte man immer wieder das handbuch durchlesen, weil die möglichkeiten und details von BBEdit mannigfaltig sind. selbst nach einem jahr war ich noch erstaunt neue features zu finden...

transmit: ist populär und okay. eine alternative ist interarchy. vorteil: es lassen sich nicht nur ftp-adressen bookmarken, sondern auch aktionen. d.h. per doppelklick wird z.B. ein verzeichnis auf der platte mit einem verzeichnis im web synchronisiert. es lassen sich auch "schedules" basteln ("alle 3 stunden das verzeichnis herunterladen"). interarchy spinnt bei mir leider beim upload von verzeichnissen in verzeichnissen herum.

ACDsee: wie sieht es mit "iView" aus?

Als FTP Client solltet ihr evt. auch mal Cyberduck in Erwägung ziehen, ist OpenSource, kann alles und ist schnell: http://icu.unizh.ch/~dkocher/cyberduck/

Wenn man nur SCP bzw. SFTP verwendet, kann ich Fugu empfehlen.

Äh .. zu schnell gepostet. Für Notizen verwende ich im Moment Xnippets. Sonst noch was? Als Editor wird SubEthaEdit (ehemals Hydra) mir immer sympathischer.

danke fuer die hinweise!
ich werde mir die angesprochenen programme mal ansehen, solange man sich noch nicht 100% festgelegt tut ein umstieg noch nicht weh.

SubEthaEdit fand ich vom konzept ueberzeugend, da ich aber seine hauptfunktion, das kollaborative schreiben, nicht nutze, hab ich es bisher nicht getestet.

iView werd ich mir auch gleich mal ansehen, das kannte ich bisher nicht.
