The Job
The job of a tattoo artist (also called a tattoo designer, tattooist or tattooer) is fairly straightfoward: Create tattoos on people's bodies.

Skills
A knowledge of safety practices is also key. Taking preventive measure against the spread of disease is a critical part of doing the job correctly.

Education
There is no standard educational background or training for tattoo designers, although many tattoo artists have some sort of artistic background.

Outlook
Although there are no definitive numbers on how many tattoo designers there are in the US, the executive director of Alliance of Professional Tattooists estimates there are more than 10,000. It's an extremely competitive field that's drawn many people in recent years. Many people try the field but choose to leave it within five years.
